Pip Welch
Pip began in motorsport at the age of 18 years after formative years spent fanging about in home-made Billy Carts, terrorising the locals and exhausting the local supply of used pram wheels! "Even my little sisters trike wheels were borrowed for a small price"! Many successful years were spent in the left-hand navigators seat taking part in trials with plenty of success in Tasmanian State Trials Championships. Over the years, Trials as were known gave way to what we now all know as Rallying and "Navigators gave way to "Scriptual Instructors" and the art of "Navigation" became lost. At this point Pip turned to driving rally cars, starting out in a Mk 1 Ford Escort, gaining many good placings in Tasmanian rallies. Despite not winning any rallies outright, consistency and many good placing resulted in an overall win in the Tasmanian State PRC Titles! The Escort was eventually totalled, so Pip headed back into the Co-Pilots role in a very fast RX2 Mazda rotor, resulting in a Tasmanian State Championships victory and a 6th outright in the 1985 Australian Rally Championships partnering Andrew Murfitt. Sporadic involvement in motorsport over the next 5 years leading to competing in 12 Targa Tasmania's partnering fellow F-Vee racer, John Pooley. It was John Pooley who talked Pip into having a go in F-Vee's and in Pip's own words, "Boy, why did I wait 'till I was over 50 years old to get into F-Vee's"! The Trowbridge F-Vee was purchased from Noel Clarke who, along with Noel's longtime engineer, Steve Byers, have extensively overhauled and re-built the old girl! |
